Gator HR1 Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
The HR1 delivers the security of a hard cover with the convenience of a roll-up design. We built this tonneau around powder-coated aluminum slats that lock together when closed, giving your cargo genuine theft deterrence while maintaining the fast one-handed access roll-ups are known for. The cover retracts toward the cab and secures with a dual-latch system at the tailgate—no tools, no wrestling with clamps.
Unlike soft vinyl roll-ups that sag or tear, the HR1’s slat construction holds its shape in rain, snow, and highway wind. The cover sits flush when closed and rolls to a compact 12-inch canister behind the cab when you need full bed access. Our low-profile design preserves your truck’s lines and adds less than three inches of height when installed.
What makes the HR1 different

Aluminum Slat Construction & Weather Protection
Each slat in the gator hr1 hard roll up tonneau cover is stamped from .040-inch aluminum and coated with a textured powder finish that resists chips and UV fade. The slats interlock along their edges when the cover is closed, creating a continuous surface that sheds water toward the drain channels built into the side rails. We include EPDM rubber seals that run the full perimeter of the bed—front bulkhead, both sides, and tailgate—so rain stays out even during highway speeds or stationary downpours.
The canister housing at the front of the bed uses the same powder-coated aluminum and seals with a neoprene gasket where it meets the bulkhead. Because the slats roll around a fixed axle instead of folding on hinges, there are no gaps or flex points that let dust migrate into the bed during off-road use.

Installation & Bed Rail Compatibility
The HR1 mounts via adjustable C-clamps that grip the inside and outside faces of your bed rails. You position the side rails, hand-tighten the clamps, check squareness with the included alignment template, then torque the clamp bolts to 8 ft-lbs. The entire process takes 20-30 minutes with a socket wrench and doesn’t require drilling or modifications to the truck.
Our clamp design works with factory bed rails and most aftermarket stake pocket caps. If your truck has spray-in bedliner that extends over the top of the rails, the clamps adjust outward to accommodate the extra thickness. The front canister sits 12 inches behind the bulkhead when the cover is fully open, leaving the forward portion of the bed clear for tall cargo or toolboxes.
Locking Mechanism & Security Features
Dual-Latch Tailgate Lock
The HR1 uses two keyed rotary latches mounted near the tailgate corners. When you turn the key, both latches engage striker pins on the underside of the last slat, pulling the cover taut and locking it in place. The same key also operates your tailgate lock if you choose to sync the cylinders (matching is available as an add-on service).
Slat Interlock System
When closed, each slat overlaps the one behind it by half an inch and hooks into a channel along the edge. This interlock prevents prying—an intruder can’t lift one slat without releasing the entire cover from the tailgate, which requires the key. The system is similar to what you’d find on hard folding covers in terms of theft resistance, but with the added benefit of full retraction when you need open-bed hauling.

Common Questions About the HR1 Hard Roll-Up Cover
Yes. The clamp system adjusts to accommodate spray-in liners that extend over the top of the bed rails. You’ll set the clamps slightly wider to grip both the liner and the rail underneath. If your liner is textured or very thick, we recommend test-fitting the clamps before final installation to ensure adequate bite.
The HR1 is compatible with most fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitches as long as the hitch does not interfere with the front canister position. The canister sits 12 inches behind the bulkhead, so if your hitch mount is flush or recessed when not in use, there’s typically clearance. Measure from your bulkhead to the front edge of the hitch plate to confirm.
The slats shed light snow easily and the cover can be rolled open even with a dusting on top. For heavy snow or ice, clear the surface before operating to avoid stressing the canister mechanism. The powder coat and seals are cold-weather rated and won’t crack in freezing temperatures.
The HR1 is designed to protect cargo inside the bed, not to serve as a roof rack. The slats will support incidental weight like a hand or knee during installation, but we do not recommend placing heavy items on top of the closed cover. Sustained loads can deform the slats or compromise the seal.
Yes. Loosen the clamp bolts on both side rails and lift the entire assembly off the bed. The cover comes off as one unit—canister, rails, and slats stay attached—so you can reinstall it later without re-aligning. The process takes about five minutes and requires a socket wrench.
The HR1’s rotary latches use a standard automotive key cylinder. You can have a locksmith re-key the tonneau cylinders to match your truck’s ignition or tailgate key, or you can order matched cylinders from us when you purchase the cover. The latches themselves are universal and work independently of the tailgate lock if you prefer separate keys.
The side rails sit inside the bed and reduce usable width by about half an inch on each side. The canister takes up 12 inches of length at the front when the cover is fully open. When closed, the cover sits flush with the bed rails and does not intrude into the cargo area.
