Gator Tailback Tonneau Cover – Hard Folding Truck Bed Protection
The Gator Tailback tonneau cover brings professional-grade security to your truck bed with a tri-fold hard panel design and integrated dual-lock system. We engineered this cover for drivers who need quick access without sacrificing theft protection or weather sealing.
Each panel features powder-coated aluminum construction with high-density foam core insulation, keeping cargo dry through rain, snow, and highway spray. The Tailback folds flat against your cab in seconds when you need full bed access, then locks down tight with our patented clamp rail system when closed. Whether you’re hauling tools to a jobsite or weekend gear across state lines, this cover handles daily abuse while maintaining a low-profile look.
Tailback design highlights

Panel Construction & Weather Sealing
We build every Tailback panel from marine-grade 6061 aluminum sheets bonded to a closed-cell foam core, then finish each surface with electrostatic powder coating for corrosion resistance. This layered construction gives you impact protection without the weight penalty of solid steel—each panel weighs under 18 pounds, so one person can install or remove the cover solo.
The EPDM rubber seals run continuously along every panel edge and meet at reinforced corner junctions where water intrusion typically starts on lesser covers. We tested the Tailback seal in our rain chamber at pressures equivalent to 80 mph highway speeds; no water reached the bed floor after 45 minutes of simulated storm conditions. That same foam core also insulates your bed, reducing interior temperature swings by up to 15°F compared to open-bed exposure.

Clamp Rail System & Installation
The Tailback mounts via our patent-pending clamp rail system that grips your truck’s bed rails without drilling, welding, or adhesive. Each clamp applies 120 pounds of clamping force distributed across a rubberized contact pad, eliminating paint damage and accommodating minor bed rail variations between truck models.
Installation takes 25-35 minutes with basic hand tools—no power drill required. We include position templates for 47 popular truck models from Ford, Chevy, Ram, GMC, and Toyota. The kit ships with all stainless hardware, two cylinder locks keyed alike, and illustrated instructions. If you need to remove the cover for oversized loads, the entire assembly lifts off in under 60 seconds by releasing eight spring-loaded clamps.
Security Features & Locking Mechanism
Dual-Lock Design
The Tailback secures at two independent points: a primary cylinder lock at the rear panel and a secondary latch near the cab. Both must release before any panel can open, forcing potential thieves to defeat two separate mechanisms. The cylinder locks use automotive-grade seven-pin tumblers—the same spec we use across our hard folding cover lineup—and we key both locks identically so you only carry one key.
Tailgate Integration
When locked, the Tailback prevents your tailgate from opening even if the tailgate’s own lock is defeated. The rear panel overlaps the tailgate edge by 1.5 inches, physically blocking upward tailgate movement. This design earned the Tailback a Secured rating from the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s theft-resistance testing program.

Common Questions About the Tailback Cover
Yes, the Tailback works with most spray-in bedliners, drop-in liners, and factory bed rail caps up to 0.75 inches thick. The clamp rail system adjusts vertically to accommodate the added height from your liner. If you have an extremely thick custom liner or raised bed rail accessories, measure the total height from your bed floor to the top of the rail cap—it should not exceed 1.5 inches above the factory bed rail height for proper fitment.
The Tailback supports up to 500 pounds of evenly distributed weight when fully closed and locked. This means you can walk on it during installation, stack lightweight cargo like kayaks or rooftop carrier boxes, or lean a ladder across it without damaging the panels. Do not concentrate weight on a single panel hinge line or exceed the 500 lb total capacity. The cover is not designed to support vehicle recovery loads or serve as a permanent platform.
Yes, the Tailback uses mechanical cylinder locks that require no electrical power. You unlock it with the physical key regardless of your truck’s battery status. This is one reason we chose cylinder locks over electronic systems—they work in any condition and don’t require pairing with your truck’s computer or maintaining separate batteries.
The powder-coated aluminum and EPDM seals require minimal maintenance. We recommend wiping the panels with mild soap and water every few months to remove road grime, then applying a UV protectant spray to the rubber seals twice per year to prevent cracking in extreme sun exposure. Lubricate the hinge pivot points and lock cylinders with silicone spray once per season. Avoid abrasive cleaners or pressure washers aimed directly at the panel seams, as high pressure can force water past the seals.
The Tailback installs on the bed rail surface, so it will not fit if you have a bed rack or toolbox that occupies the same mounting area. If your toolbox sits behind the cab and is 18 inches tall or less, consider our Gator Defender Toolbox Combo model instead—it’s specifically designed to work with crossover boxes. Standard bed racks that mount inside the bed or via stake pockets will physically interfere with the Tailback’s clamp rails. Remove existing bed rail accessories before installation.
We tested the Tailback in our wind tunnel at simulated speeds up to 90 mph with no panel flutter or seal failure. The clamp rail system applies constant tension that prevents panel lift even in crosswinds. Drivers report stable, quiet performance on long highway trips. The low 2.5-inch profile height reduces aerodynamic drag compared to open beds, which also improves fuel economy. If you hear any vibration or rattling after installation, check that all eight clamps are tightened to the specified 15 ft-lb torque.
Our warranty covers structural defects in the aluminum panels, hinge mechanisms, clamp rail components, and lock cylinders for five years from your purchase date. This includes failures due to material defects or manufacturing errors. The warranty does not cover normal wear on rubber seals, cosmetic damage from accidents or modifications, or damage caused by improper installation or overloading. We also exclude coverage if the cover is installed on a vehicle outside our published compatibility list. Register your cover within 30 days of installation to activate full warranty benefits.
