GatorTrax MX Tonneau Cover | Retractable Truck Bed Protection
We built the GatorTrax MX for truck owners who need secure storage without sacrificing quick bed access. This retractable tonneau cover rides on aluminum slats housed in a low-profile canister, retracting completely in under eight seconds with one hand on the pull strap. The system locks at any position along the bed rail, so you can secure partial loads or open the full bed depending on the haul.
Every MX ships with a matte black powder-coated finish that resists UV fade and surface scratches. The canister mounts flush behind the cab, maintaining your sight lines and truck aerodynamics. Whether you're hauling tools to a job site or gear for the weekend, the MX keeps your cargo out of sight and protected from weather.
What makes the MX different

Aluminum slat construction and canister design
The GatorTrax MX uses interlocking aluminum slats that roll into a canister mounted at the front of your truck bed. Each slat features a double-wall profile with internal ribs that distribute impact loads across the width of the cover. This design handles standing weight without flexing or warping, so you can lean tools or cargo against the closed cover during loading.
The canister itself is a sealed aluminum housing that protects the internal tracks and roller mechanism from road debris and weather. We mount it with a low-profile bracket system that sits just 3.2 inches above your bed rail, preserving rear visibility and minimizing wind resistance. The entire assembly retracts behind the cab line when fully open, giving you complete bed access without removing any hardware.

Locking mechanism and security features
We integrated a dual-action locking system that secures the cover at any point along your bed rail. Turn the rotary latch at the tailgate to engage stainless steel pins that drop into the rail channel, locking the cover in place whether it’s fully closed, halfway open, or anywhere in between. This lets you secure odd-length cargo without exposing your entire bed.
The canister includes a separate keyed lock that prevents anyone from retracting the cover when you’re parked. Both lock cylinders use the same key, and we include two spares with every MX. The locking pins are recessed into the rail mount, so there’s no external hardware to cut or pry when the system is engaged.
Installation process and bed compatibility
The GatorTrax MX installs without drilling into your truck bed. We designed a clamp-style rail system that grips the top edge of your bed wall, distributing clamping force across six mounting points per side. The kit includes all necessary hardware and a torque-spec guide to ensure even pressure along the rail.
Most installations take 35 to 45 minutes with basic hand tools. The canister bracket bolts directly to the front bed wall using existing stake pocket holes on most full-size trucks. For beds without factory stake pockets, we include adhesive-backed mounting pads that create secure anchor points. The system fits bed lengths from 5.5 to 8 feet and works with most spray-in liners as long as the bed rail edge remains accessible for the clamp.

Common questions about the GatorTrax MX
Yes, the MX clamp system works with most spray-in bed liners as long as the top edge of your bed rail remains accessible for the clamp to grip. The clamps are adjustable to accommodate liner thickness up to 0.5 inches. If your liner covers the entire bed rail edge, you may need to trim a small section where the clamps mount, or use our adhesive-backed rail adapters included in the installation kit.
The MX features a dual-locking system with a rotary tailgate latch and a keyed canister lock. When both locks are engaged, the cover cannot be retracted or removed without the key. The stainless steel locking pins drop into recessed channels in the rail mount, so there's no external hardware to cut or pry. While no tonneau cover is theft-proof, the MX provides strong deterrence and keeps your cargo out of sight.
Yes, the locking mechanism secures the cover at any position along your bed rail. You can retract it halfway to accommodate longer cargo like lumber or kayaks while keeping the front half of your bed covered and locked. Just pull the cover open to your desired position and engage the rotary latch to lock it in place.
The canister sits 3.2 inches above your bed rail when the cover is closed. This is our lowest-profile retractable design and maintains good rear visibility through your cab window. When the cover is fully retracted, the canister remains in place at the front of the bed but does not interfere with most over-the-cab cargo or fifth-wheel hitches.
We recommend applying silicone spray to the canister tracks every six months to keep the slats rolling smoothly. Check the strap tension adjustment twice a year and tighten the rail clamps if you notice any play. Clean the EPDM gasket with mild soap and water to maintain the weather seal. The powder-coated finish requires no special care beyond occasional washing with truck soap.
The MX rail system mounts to the top edge of your bed wall and does not interfere with factory tie-down loops or most bed rail accessories. If you have over-the-rail toolboxes or bike racks, you'll need to remove them before installing the MX rails. The cover is compatible with most bed extenders, tailgate steps, and under-rail lighting systems.
The MX uses a perimeter gasket and overlapping slat design to keep most water out of your bed during normal driving conditions. The integrated drain channels route water away from the bed rather than letting it pool on the cover. While the MX is highly water-resistant, it is not a sealed waterproof system like a hard one-piece lid. It will keep tools, gear, and cargo dry in rain and snow, but is not intended for transporting items that cannot tolerate any moisture exposure.
