GatorTrax Tonneau Cover – Retractable Truck Bed Protection

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

The GatorTrax tonneau cover brings retractable convenience to your truck bed without compromising security or weather protection. We engineered this cover with interlocking aluminum slats that glide smoothly on dual ball-bearing tracks, giving you instant access to your cargo with one hand. The low-profile canister sits flush against your cab, preserving your truck’s sight lines and aerodynamics.

Whether you’re hauling tools to the job site or gear for the weekend, our GatorTrax system adapts to your load. Open it fully for oversized cargo, close it completely for weather protection, or stop anywhere in between. The automatic tensioning system keeps the slats taut in all positions, and the reinforced crossbars distribute weight evenly across your bed rails.

Materials & construction built for daily use

We built the GatorTrax with extruded aluminum slats that lock together when closed, creating a rigid surface strong enough to support distributed loads up to 300 pounds. Each slat features a matte black powder-coat finish that resists UV degradation and road salt corrosion season after season.

The track assemblies use sealed ball bearings that handle moisture and dust without binding. Our engineering team tested these bearings through 50,000 open-close cycles in climate chamber conditions ranging from -20°F to 140°F. The canister housing is injection-molded ABS reinforced with fiberglass strands, giving it impact resistance without adding unnecessary weight to your truck.

Sizing & fit

Weatherproof seal system

The GatorTrax employs EPDM rubber seals along all four edges – front, rear, and both sides. These seals compress against your bed rails when the cover is closed, creating a barrier that keeps rain, snow, and road spray out of your cargo area.

Tested seal performance

We run every seal design through pressure-wash testing at 1,500 PSI to simulate highway rain conditions. The front seal features an extra lip that tucks under the canister, preventing water intrusion even when you’re driving into heavy weather. Drain channels molded into the side rails direct any moisture away from the bed and out through existing drain holes in your truck’s tailgate area.

Styling

Installation & bed rail compatibility

The GatorTrax uses a clamp-on mounting system that attaches to your existing bed rails without drilling. We include adjustable clamps that fit rail widths from 1.5 to 3 inches, covering most factory bed rail profiles from Ford, Chevy, RAM, Toyota, and Nissan trucks.

Installation takes about 45 minutes with basic hand tools. Our kit includes position templates that help you align the side rails parallel to your bed. Once the rails are clamped in place, the canister assembly drops into front brackets and locks with two thumb screws. The system is designed so the cover can be removed entirely in under five minutes if you need full bed access for taller cargo.

Opens smoother than I expected
I was worried about having to fight with a retractable cover every morning, but this thing glides open with one hand even when it’s cold out. The automatic tensioning is real – it stays put wherever I stop it, which is great for loading longer items that stick out past the tailgate.

No leaks after two months of rain
We’ve had constant rain since I installed this cover, and my tools are still dry. The seal along the tailgate is tighter than I expected from a retractable design. I can tell they put actual thought into the drainage because water doesn’t pool anywhere on top.

Installation was straightforward
Took me about an hour by myself, mostly because I’m picky about getting things level. The clamps are solid and the instructions were clear. Only complaint is the canister adds a little more bulk than I thought it would, but it doesn’t block my rear window.

Perfect for my landscaping business
I need to get in and out of my bed all day, and this cover makes it fast. I can open it halfway to grab tools without fully retracting it, which saves time. The slats hold up to getting bumped by equipment, and the powder coat hasn’t scratched yet.

Quieter on the highway than my old soft cover
My previous vinyl cover used to flap and buzz at highway speeds. The GatorTrax sits tight and silent even at 75 mph. I also noticed a slight improvement in my gas mileage, probably from the better aerodynamics.

Good balance of security and convenience
I wouldn’t leave expensive power tools under it overnight in a sketchy area, but for day-to-day use it keeps things out of sight and locked with my tailgate. The rigid slats feel way more secure than the soft covers I’ve used before.

Good to know

Common questions about the GatorTrax cover

The GatorTrax is designed to fit most full-size trucks with standard bed lengths including Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, RAM 1500, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan models. Our adjustable clamp system accommodates bed rail widths from 1.5 to 3 inches, which covers the majority of factory rail profiles.

If you have an aftermarket bed liner or non-standard bed rails, check our Universal Bed Rail Adapter Kit for custom clamp options. For specific fitment confirmation, measure the width of your bed rails at the mounting surface and contact our support team with your truck’s year, make, and model.

No, the GatorTrax requires the tailgate to be in the open position for the cover to retract. The slats pull toward the cab and store in the canister, so there needs to be clearance at the tailgate end for the cover to move.

This design ensures a tight seal when closed and keeps the mechanism simple and reliable. If you need access to smaller items without opening the tailgate, consider adding a bed-mounted toolbox that sits under the cover.

The GatorTrax canister measures 13 inches from the front of your bed to the rear face of the canister housing when fully installed. This leaves you with full bed length minus 13 inches of usable cargo space when the cover is fully retracted.

The canister sits 11 inches tall from the bed floor, which is low enough to maintain your rear window view in most truck cabs. It does not interfere with fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch installations that mount in the forward bed area.

The GatorTrax is engineered as water-resistant, not fully waterproof. The EPDM seals create a tight barrier that keeps out rain, snow, and road spray under normal driving and weather conditions. We’ve tested the seal system with pressure washing at highway rain simulation levels, and it performs well.

That said, no retractable cover design can guarantee zero moisture intrusion in extreme conditions like prolonged submersion or sustained pressure washing directly at the seams. For most users, the cover keeps cargo dry through daily use, but if you’re storing items that cannot tolerate any moisture, we recommend additional protection like waterproof bags or bins.

Yes, the GatorTrax automatic tensioning system allows you to drive with the cover in any partially open position. The slats stay taut and secure wherever you stop them, so you can haul cargo that extends past the canister without the cover flapping or coming loose.

Just make sure any protruding cargo is properly secured with straps or tie-downs, and always check your local regulations about load overhang limits. The cover itself will stay in position during highway driving as long as it’s latched at the point where you stopped it.

The ball-bearing tracks are sealed and pre-lubricated, so they don’t require regular greasing. We recommend rinsing the slats and rails with water every few months to remove dirt and road salt that can accumulate in the channels.

Check the EPDM seals once or twice a year for any debris caught in the seal grooves, and wipe them clean with a damp cloth. If you notice the cover becoming harder to open over time, a light spray of silicone lubricant on the side rails will restore smooth operation. Avoid using petroleum-based lubricants, as they can degrade the rubber seals.

The GatorTrax is not compatible with bed racks or crossbars that mount to the top of your bed rails, since the cover’s side rails clamp onto those same rails. If you need both a tonneau cover and a rack system, you’ll need to choose one or the other, or look into rack systems that mount inside the bed or to the cab.

Some customers use removable tie-down anchors or D-rings that mount flush with the bed when not in use, which works well with the GatorTrax for securing cargo without interfering with the cover’s operation.
